MatLab-Software for fatigue life calculations of freewheels

Introduction and Motivation

JFRED is the current software for life calculations of freewheels in switching operation and was developed within the FVA projects 137 I-VI. JFRED calculation covers all common types of freewheels – sprag and roller freewheels – and considers geometry, material, mechanical loads, and the support structure. In addition to life calculations in switching operation, JFRED offers calculation and optimization tools for the sprag contour. Although the calculation software JFRED is widely used for research as well as industrial purposes, it is facing two interconnected challenges: useability limitations due to outdated programming languages and extensibility limitations for integrating new research results.

Research objectives

The overall objective of this research project is to develop an extendable research software for life calculations of sprag and roller freewheels in MATLAB software. Thus, the functions of the calculation software "JFRED" should be transferred to MatLab in a new program "MANFRED".

In order to maintain the usability by the industry and for the purpose of wide expandability, the following objectives will be pursued:

  • Program executability without a paid MATLAB license
  • Use of a graphical user interface (GUI)
  • Integration of the new research results in the calculation core
  • Development an interface for the expandability
