Go-ahead for Project FutureSite
MSE and Cybernetics Lab develop communicational infrastructure for automated, cooperating construction machines in realistic scenarios
As FutureSite - a project financed by the European Regional Development Fund (ERDF) - has been approved, the Institute for Machine Elements and Systems Engineering alongside the RWTH’s Cybernetics Lab are looking forward to putting their joint approach into action: over the next three years scientists will be developing a model construction site including a non-proprietary communication structure which aims to link process data with machinery as well as environmental information. In the future, this will allow innovative construction site technologies and automatization solutions to be tested under realistic conditions.
Research and development will take place at the Aldenhoven Testing Center (ATC) which will provide scientists and industrial companies with the latest communications standards while a Galileo Emulation based on pseudolites warrants up-to-date geolocation standards. Industry needs are a defining element of the research to be carried out at Aldenhoven: “Defining industrial application scenarios beside necessary tests and interfaces is going to be an integral part of FutureSite right from the start,” explains Achim Kramer, Head of MSE’s Off-Highway division. “FutureSite creates the communicational infrastructure for the digitalisation of construction sites and thus the conditions for future automatization projects. Therefore, it is very important to us to carry out our research with Cybernetics Lab, combining and applying both institutes’ core competencies in various scenarios,” Kramer underlines FutureSite’s interdisciplinary approach.
